FEATURED MAG OF THE MONTH: STRANGER:

We have a great range of creative and cool magazines stocked here at kitch-en but many of you may not know what these magazines are all about. That's why we've decided to do a little feature on a magazine each month and show you what's what. This month we're throwing the spotlight onto a cool little A5-er known as STRANGER.

So What is it?
From their website: "Stranger is an award-winning creative lifestyle, surf, music, environment and graphics magazine based in Falmouth, Cornwall. We hope to offer a fresh and inspiring vision of life, different from anything you've seen in other publications".
What's in it?
Over 90 pages of well designed articles covering life, earth & sounds. The latest issue (no.12) contains features such as:
• 'Men in Black' - a look at the bouncers that keep us safe in clubs around the country, or do they?
• 'Let's Talk About Sex' - A chat with independent film maker Ed Blum who's just released his debut film 'Scenes of a Sexual Nature'
• 'Hot Air' - A look at the political debate over climate change.
It also includes interviews with up and coming bands, news, cool new fashion as well as the 'Stranger Folio' - a look at emerging artists and designers.
How much is it?
The vital piece of information... it's just £1.50 so for that price you can't go wrong. Even if you're not totally into the 'surf culture' it's still a very entertaining and graphically interesting read.

HODGEPODGE MARKET:

Most of you will have received the email about this so I'll keep this short and just throw in a brief reminder:
What? Hodgepodge Market - 11 Stalls selling a complete mishmash of art, crafts, design, fashion, music & more...
Where? Bar 2 ZERO 2, 201 - 203 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough. (Opposite Sainsbury's and TS1)
When? This Saturday 9th December, 12 - 4pm.
Why? It's the perfect opportunity to find great unique and affordable Christmas gifts made by local artists/designers/makers. It's also a cool place to grab a coffee and a bite to eat as 2 ZERO 2 has just relaunched it's menu - now serving a range of great tasting Tapas dishes from just £1.50.
More Info? Head over to the Hodgepodge myspace: www.myspace.com/hodgepodge_market or email info@kitch-en.co.uk

CURRENT & UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS:

MY NY at Arc, Stockton - New York Photography by Mark Warner
Now showing at The Ground Floor, Arc, Dovecot Street, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 1LL until 31st December

A trip to New York in 2004 inspired Mark to produce a series of prints and an accompanying photo book that explore the hidden elements of the city.

“Having experienced all the typical tourist attractions, which were pleasant, I found myself wandering the back streets; being inspired by all the obscure, small details, the fragments that really make New York the amazing place that it is. It was all of these details that really made a lasting impression on me and created my memories of New York”

You can find more information and view examples of Mark's photography work online at: www.kitch-en.co.uk/gallery/mark_warner
View more information about Arc online: www.arconline.co.uk

DECAY - Paintings on steel & canvas by Ged Holmes
Showing at The Ground Floor, Arc, Dovecot Street, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 1LL from 1st - 31st January.

So not to influence the audience's perception and view of his work, Ged does not give an insight into his inspiration and thought process other than the title. He wants the viewer to be intrigued and puzzled by each piece, and as a result, persuades their own imagination to reflect on his work.

Geds exhibition at The Arc in January is titled Decay and consists of steel sheets with acrylic and large stretched canvas with acrylic and stitched cotton, hung throughout the ground floor.

You can find more information and view examples of Ged's art work online at: www.kitch-en.co.uk/gallery/ged_holmes

FULL ON FUTURES WORKSHOP SUCCESS & WINNING MAGAZINE:

Creative Partnerships Tees Valley once again hosted the Full on Futures event at Darlington F.C. during Enterprise Week to highlight the links between creativity and entrepreneurship and to support young people's understanding of the creative sector. The event was aimed at 14-16 year olds to give them the opportunity to meet with engaging, enterprising people, to help raise aspirations and to see real life examples of creative businesses.
One such business was us chaps at kitch-en, we held full day workshops across the 4 days engaging with various schools from across the Tees Valley teaching them 'How to Make a Magazine'. The workshop consisted of giving an insight into everything it takes to make a magazine, from assigning job roles, to working out how to appeal to a specific audience, formulating content - both written and visual, designing the layout, considering how to generate money from a magazine to actually creating a finished mock-up which was presented at the end of each day.
Each magazine produced was entered into a competition to win the opportunity to have the magazine published with a limited print run by kitch-en. At the end of the week the winning magazine was decided upon by kitch-en and the Creative Partnerships team as: "The Locker", produced by a group from Hummersknott School in Darlington.
Kitch-en can offer a range of art and design orientated workshops to all different age groups and capabilities. Please contact us for more information: info@kitch-en.co.uk
