EXHIBITIONS/EVENTS:

'Scrawl Collective' screen print collection

Thursday 17th May - Thursday 14th June
Launch party & special preview: Thursday 17th May, 5-8pm ft. Live graffiti art, FREE drinks & entertainment. All welcome.

The Scrawl Collective story begins in 1998 with the publication of Scrawl, Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters. This was the first book that really picked up where Henry Chalfont’s seminal Spray Can Art and Subway Art left off. During the research of this book one of the authors Ric Blackshaw identified an as yet barely noticed development among a few young illustrators and artists centring at that time around Bristol.

Ric decided to start his agency Scrawl Collective with the three prime movers in this scene Steff Plaetz, Will Barras and Mr Jago. The agency has continued to grow, doing exhibitions and events all over the world. Clients such as Swatch, Sony Music, Nike, Puma, Burton Snow Boards, Boxfresh, Levi’s, Addict and Virgin Mobile have all used the Scrawl touch down the years and as a consequence of this Scrawl Collective has become highly collectable with original canvasses and mural commissions fetching higher sums year on year.

By identifying and championing new talent Scrawl Collective has always stayed ahead of it’s many imitators while always being true to it’s roots.

Kitch-en will be displaying a series of limited edition silkscreen prints by Scrawl Collective throughout May and June. All prints will be signed, numbered and for sale with prices starting as low as £25. This exhibition is exclusive to Kitch-en in the North East and will be a rare opportunity to see the prints exhibited and to grab yourself a fantastic piece of artwork at a very affordable price.

'People' Exhibition, ARC, Stockton-on-Tees

Monday 4th June - Friday 29th June
ARC, Stockton-on-Tees

'People' is a joint exhibition bringing together new works by Ged Holmes and Arteest. Never before have Ged's and Arteest's work been presented alongside each other making this a rare and unique exhibition which sees both artists responding to the theme of 'People' in their distinctive and different styles.

Ged responds to the theme by sketching and painting local people from around Teesside using a fast paced style of depiction. "I believe a portrait should be more than just a painting of a face, which is why I try to capture personality and feeling through my style and use of colour. Portraits are a very personal statement for both the artist and the subject and yet they can be appreciated by many and never need an explanation, they are what they are."

Arteest expresses himself in many different ways, often using found objects and materials to draw, spray, sticker or paint onto. His work is grounded by his graphic design training and inspired by the free-thinking street art and graffiti movements that have been developing over the past 20 odd years. His artworks are just as likely to be found inside the gallery as they are on the streets and in other public spaces.

SHOWCASE:

Victoria Scott

Born in 1982, Victoria grew up in Richmond, Surrey. At the age of 5, she had already decided her future career as an illustrator.

In 2004 she graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA Hons in Illustration. Since graduation she has completed designs for companies including Paperchase, as well as exhibiting at events such as the Affordable Arts Fair in Battersea and being featured in The Times.

Victoria's work is fashion based often with a 1920's feel, although influences range from food, animals, humour, found images and often just pure fantasy. All of her pieces have a handmade aesthetic by using a variety of materials including coloured card, paint and fabric. To maintain a certain ambiguity over the characters identities, she often represents them as silhouettes.

"I like my work to remain uplifting and although it sounds cheesy I like the idea that my picture has brightened up someone’s day."

Check out Victoria's online gallery: click here to view it.

Do you want to be featured in our showcase section next month?
E-mail us 3 lo-res jpgs of your work and a few words about who you are & what you do. Only the most original and highest quality work will be showcased, but we endeavour to respond to everyone with constructive critisicm.

FEATURES:

ONEHUGEEYE

Onehugeeye is the brainchild of Alex Amelines, a graphic designer turned animator from Colombia. When book and magazine design were no longer enough, Alex jumped on a plane to the UK to study traditional animation. Before the course was finished, he found himself animating full-time for London design studio Blueberry.net.

One day, studio founder Russ Sellers was showing his son around the office, and stopped at Alex’s desk to say, "This is the dude who makes characters with one huge eye." And the name stuck.

The website started as a showcase for the quirky animations Alex made in his spare time. But in time it grew and grew to include all sorts of illustrations, toys, paintings, swag and cartoons as well as a news section featuring all the nice online finds he would bump into.

In fact it all got far too big, so Alex now separates his online portfolio from this little world of monsters and spiky orange hair.

Alex is currently working on his most ambitious animation project yet. It's the story of a dark lord who suffers from incontinence, a randy princess, two clueless knights and a narcoleptic king. It’s a steep learning curve in 3D animation, and Alex is tackling everything in his spare time. But he’s full of determination and thoroughly enjoying the challenge.
